Epidemiological research and a home-made vaccine for the disease that was decimating Maasai communities' cattle.
AVEC responded to an appeal from Maasai communities in Tanzania, whose cattle were being decimated by a serious tick-borne parasitic disease caused by Theileria taurotragi. Besides its heavy economic impact, the disease, known as "Ormilo", has distinctive neurological symptoms and no cure: the only control strategy is to develop a home-made vaccine that local laboratories can produce. The project was carried out in two phases.
